Chiropractic is a method of natural treatment for pain relief and overall well-being which involves restoring movement and function to the joints, muscles and nerves of the body. Chiropractic is primarily focused on the spine, but also includes the joints and muscles of the entire body. One of the main characteristics of chiropractic is the influence it has on the nervous system. By relieving pressure on the nerves as they come in and go out between the spinal segments, a chiropractic treatment can relieve pain, tingling, numbness and overall body dysfunction.
A chiropractor’s method of treatment is called an adjustment or manipulation. The word “chiropractic” when broken down to its Latin derivation means to do work (“practic”) by hand (“chiro”). The adjustment is performed by hand in most circumstances, although additional methods have been developed to allow for varying levels of tolerance. At BSCM we sometimes use an Activator and special tables to assist in the adjustment when a manipulation is not tolerated or in the patient’s best interest. This is determined by a thorough consultation and examination prior to any treatment being performed. Sometimes X-rays are also necessary to make that decision, and in that case we will send you to an X-ray facility nearby. OHIP covers the cost of X-rays ordered by chiropractors.
Other forms of treatment could also be used within the office to help your healing process. Please click on the “Acupuncture”, “Massage Therapy” and “Physiotherapy” tabs for additional options.
